Our Trial Run

Ok, so we get a call this weekend from Starla’s sister that she was too sick to take care of Starla’s 10 month old great niece and wanted to know if we could watch her, of course we jumped at the chance. Figured along with helping her sister this would be a good opportunity for us to “check out” our skills and what a baby is going to be like. Neither one of us has been around a baby that young in many many years (ok ok, so I have never had to care for a baby that young). Lets just say that even though I knew parenting would not be easy this really showed me how much work is ahead. At bedtime she did not want to go to sleep so I picked her up and stood in the kitchen for 45 minutes, rocking and singing to her until she fell asleep. Who would have known that I could sing a baby to sleep? Ok, I admit she must be tone deaf, or maybe she fell asleep so she wouldn’t have to listen to me anymore. Then during the night she woke up 4 or 5 times, but overall she did really well since we have never been able to spend anytime with her. Buddy (our dog) sure didn’t know what to think of all the noises in the middle of the night. I am so glad that we were able to have her in our house for 24 hours, it was a real eye opening experience. God sure does have funny ways of getting us prepared for life events.
I learned a couple things here:
- Babies do NOT take care of themselves
- I am glad I don’t have to change diapers yet (and I still have not changed one, thank you Starla)
- Babies take lots of attention but also give lots of joy
- Are these things bi-polar? How can they be laughing one second and screaming bloody murder the next?
- There is no way I am going to have time to do anything, except baby
- I thought I ate a lot
- Sleep, that is a luxury, not a right
- Oh yeah, Babies do NOT take care of themselves
I think we REALLY need to work on our feeding skills though: (click on pics for full effect)

You’re in for the ride of your life dude. Best advice I can give is pray for wisdom & patience, realize the tough times will pass too soon, and enjoy EVERY minute of their life

Hey, thanks for the support guys. Yeah, I am sure I am in for the ride of my life, I am glad that I have God on my side though. I am sure I am in for some “payback” from when I was a kid, lol. It sure was fun taking care of this little girl though- I am nervous and excitied all at once for our child.
